Study Skills

School Survival Skills

Teaches students the basic survival skills necessary for school success, with special emphasis, throughout the program, on organization. Students learn how to schedule their time, organize homework, create an appropriate work environment, listen more effectively, take more accurate notes, produce daily work and, consequently, prepare more effectively for an exam. Additionally, students learn how to answer an essay question, and how to approach the task of report writing.

The Best Dissertation
— Is a Finished Dissertation (or Thesis)

Barbara W. Cheshire, Ph.D.

A necessity for every graduate student, the purpose of this book is to help graduate students avoid or solve predictable problems that prevent approximately 46% of all doctoral students from completing their degrees. The author clearly and directly offers specific step-by-step guidelines and counseling — with abundant cross-referencing — for how such students can successfully complete their degrees.

Part 1 offers tips for solving major problems that arise, such as writer’s block, dealing with advisors, trying to be perfect, inadequate writing skills, inadequate research skills, defending ideas and style, and setting priorities and goals. Part 2 is a step-by-step guide for writing each section of the entire document, including down-to-earth counseling and explanation of the logic behind the rules for the conducting, the writing, and the defense of scholarly research. Part 3 provides information about academic regalia, etiquette concerning use of the new title, and encouragement to publish the research. Extremely useful appendices include a usage guide for frequent graduate-level trouble spots, as well as a list of strong verbs and transitional words and phrases for quick reference.

Systematic Desensitization
- A Self-Guided Method for Reduction of Test Anxiety

Justin Lucian, FSC

Recent neurophysiological research indicates the effectiveness of learned control over one’s muscular relaxation. Psychology journals continue to report clinical evidence for the successful elimination of inappropriate fears in people. Students are people; they have test-related anxieties, exam-time worries. This program is designed to bring about relaxation in the presence of the previously feared test situation.

Using standard systematic desensitation procedures, extinction of the unpleasant emotional reactions occurs because the usual anxiety responses cannot take place when the student is experiencing more pleasant relaxation. The student is directed to practice relaxation and counterconditioning with the program’s recordings. Self-guided exercises produce a personal anxiety-provoking experiences list from which specific fears are eliminated.

Spelling
Delpha Hurlburt

A detailed review of spelling, primarily through a phonetic approach, rather than a rule approach. Students carefully identify each word they encounter for pronunciation and spelling, syllable by syllable. Understanding how sound and spelling correspond, students are then taught to spell unfamiliar words by systematically applying their knowledge of sound as they analyze each word one syllable at a time. The dictionary is emphasized as a tool to complete understanding of words, their meaning, their use, and spelling.
